This article explains how to add a Matter device to Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini, or Homey Self-Hosted Server. The steps depend on which product you use, so find your setup below.
Matter device types supported by Homey
See the full list of supported device types.
Matter-over-Thread
Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini, and Homey Self-Hosted Server can all add Matter-over-Thread devices. See Thread on Homey for more on how Thread works.
Homey Self-Hosted Server needs a Thread Border Router already on your network for this. See Using Matter-over-Thread with Homey Self-Hosted Server for the steps.
If Homey Pro only has an Ethernet connection, select a Wi-Fi network manually when you connect a Matter-over-Wi-Fi device.
Requirements
- Homey Pro firmware v10.3.0 or newer, to set up devices through the Homey Web App
- Homey Mobile App v9.2.5 or newer
- iOS 18.5 or newer, or Android 8 or newer with the latest Google Play Services
- Homey Self-Hosted Server: a Thread Border Router on your local network, to add Matter-over-Thread devices
Add a device through the Homey Web App
Use this method on Homey Pro (2023 — 2026). Adding a Matter-over-Thread device this way always uses Homey Pro’s own Thread network.
1. Go to my.homey.app and sign in.
2. Click the plus icon, then click New Device.
3. Click Homey, then click Matter.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Add a device through the Homey Mobile App
Use this method on Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini, or Homey Self-Hosted Server.
1. Open the Homey Mobile App and tap Devices.
2. Tap the plus icon, then tap New Device.
3. Tap Matter under Technologies.
4. On Homey Pro, choose Connect via Homey Pro or Connect via Android/iOS. Homey Pro mini and Homey Self-Hosted Server skip this step and always pair through your phone.
Connect via Homey Pro uses Homey Pro’s own Thread network and works for most setups. Homey Pro uses Bluetooth to make the initial connection to the device, then switches to Thread or Wi-Fi once the device joins the network. Keep the Matter device near Homey Pro while connecting. A Matter-over-Wi-Fi device joins the same Wi-Fi network as Homey Pro.
Connect via Android/iOS uses your phone’s Thread network instead, and your phone makes the Bluetooth connection, so keep the device near your phone while connecting. A Matter-over-Wi-Fi device joins the same Wi-Fi network as your phone.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Known issues
Some Android phones don’t pair with Matter devices even with the required Android and Google Play Services versions installed. The Matter API in Google Play Services can take up to 24 hours to update. If pairing fails, wait a day and try again before contacting support.
