The Homey Web App and the Homey Mobile App allow you to connect a Matter device over Wi-Fi or Thread. Here, we will guide you through it.
The Homey Web App will connect Matter over Thread devices to Homey Pro’s Thread network. Matter over Wi-Fi devices will connect to the same Wi-Fi network as Homey Pro.
If Homey Pro is not connected to Wi-Fi and uses only an Ethernet connection, you must select a Wi-Fi network when manually connecting the Matter device.
There is no need to install apps for Matter devices
Homey Pro determines the device’s capabilities without installing any apps.
Homey Web App
Follow these steps to connect a Matter device in the Homey Web App.
Requirements
Ensure Homey Pro is updated to v10.3.0 or newer before connecting your Matter device.
Step 1
Go to https://my.homey.app and sign in to your Homey account.
Step 2
Once signed in, click on → New Device in the upper-right corner.
Step 3
Click on Homey, then click on Matter.
Step 4
Follow the on-screen instructions. If everything goes successfully, the Matter device will be added to Homey Pro. If not, please refer to Thread for Homey Pro for more information.
Homey Mobile App
Follow these steps in the Homey app to connect a Matter device.
Requirements
Ensure the Homey app is updated to v7.1.0 or newer and that your mobile device runs on iOS 16.5 or later or Android 8 or later.
Step 1
Open the Homey app and tap Devices in the tab bar.
Step 2
Tap → New Device in the upper-right corner.
Step 3
Tap Matter in the Technologies section.
Step 4
Follow the on-screen instructions. The first connection screen will ask you to either Connect via Homey Pro or Connect via Android/iOS.
The difference is which Thread network is used for Matter-over-Thread devices.
- Connect via Homey Pro: This option is advised for most users, as it always uses Homey Pro’s own Thread network.
- Connect via Android/iOS: This option uses the mobile device’s configured Thread network to connect to the Matter device.
If everything goes successfully, the Matter device will be added to Homey Pro. If not, please refer to Thread for Homey Pro for more information.
Tips & Tricks
To get the best experience with Matter and Thread on Homey, keep the following in mind.
- Network gear: disable multicast enhancements, VLAN, or mDNS forwarding features in your home network. You can find this in your home router’s settings.
- Device firmware: avoid Matter 1.0, update if possible. Use the manufacturer’s app to ensure the device’s firmware is up to date.
- Build a strong Thread mesh network: ensure there are enough Thread Routers available. In general, mains-powered devices are Thread Routers.
- Thread and Wi-Fi interference: move Wi-Fi to channel 1 and avoid channel 11.
- Thread Border Router setup: prefer a single Ethernet Thread Border Router; avoid multiple Wi-Fi Thread Border Routers.
Known issues
Some Android devices cannot pair with Matter devices even though the supported Android and Google Play Services versions are installed. Note that the Matter API of Google Play Services can take up to 24 hours to update.
