To use Matter-over-Thread devices with Homey Self-Hosted Server, a Thread Border Router must be present on your local network. Follow these steps to check and set it up.
1. Add a Thread Border Router
Add and set up a supported Thread Border Router using the manufacturer’s app.
2. Make sure the Thread credentials are synced to your phone
Open the Homey Mobile App and go to More (…) → Settings → Thread to check if your LAN has a Thread Border Router available.
Homey’s Thread network unavailable?
Your phone may not be on the same local network as the Thread Border Router. Connect to the same network and try again.
3. Add your Matter-over-Thread devices in Homey
Go to the Devices tab and tap → New Device → Matter.
How Thread credentials work
When you set up a Thread Border Router, the manufacturer’s app — like Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa — syncs the Thread network credentials to your mobile device. Your phone securely stores these credentials and makes them available to other apps, including Homey.
During device setup, Homey uses the Thread credentials from your phone to add Matter-over-Thread devices to the existing Thread network created by the Thread Border Router.
Thread Border Routers
These are commonly used Thread Border Routers. Other models also work if their app shares Thread credentials with your phone.
