Homey can update the software running on your connected devices, also called firmware. Updates can fix issues, improve stability, or add new features.
Device updates are supported for Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Matter devices. Not every device has updates available — this depends on the device and its developer.
Downgrading to an older version is not supported.
Installing an update
Updates must be started manually. There are two ways to find them.
1. From the updates overview
Navigate to More (…) → Settings → Device Updates
2. From the device settings
Open the device, go to its settings, and tap Maintenance to check for available updates.
How updates work
Only one device updates at a time. This keeps your Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Thread mesh stable and prevents network congestion.
Queueing updates
You can queue multiple devices. Homey will update them one by one.
Battery-powered devices that use a sleep mode cannot be queued. When their radio is off, Homey can’t reach them, so they need to be woken up manually before the update can start. Homey will walk you through this when you start the update.
Update duration
Updates can take a while, especially for battery-powered devices. Some devices will briefly turn on or off during the update. Keep this in mind for plugs and lights.
Tracking progress
You can follow the progress of updates in the Device Updates view. When an update completes, Homey adds a notification to your timeline.
Update sources
Z-Wave and Zigbee
Updates for Z-Wave and Zigbee devices are provided through their respective Homey apps. If you expect an update but don’t see one, contact the app developer.
Devices added using the basic Z-Wave or Zigbee driver do not receive updates.
Matter
Matter updates are fetched from the Matter Distributed Compliance Ledger (DCL), a public registry of certified Matter devices maintained by the Connectivity Standards Alliance. If an expected update isn’t showing up, it likely hasn’t been published to the DCL yet.
Failed updates
If an update fails, Homey adds a notification to your timeline. Open the Device Updates view to see what went wrong. You can restart the update from there.
If updates keep failing, try the following.
- Weak signal — If the device is battery-powered or at the edge of your mesh, move it closer to Homey during the update to improve connection stability.
- Low battery — Firmware updates use more power than normal operation. Replace the battery and try again.
